Burford is located in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds in England. Burford lies about 30 kilometres to the west of Oxford on the River Windrush and is one of the most visited tourist towns in the Cotswolds. The name Burford comes from the old English words 'burh' meaning fortified town or hilltown and 'ford' meaning ford.

Burford town centre features some very old buildings and houses dating from the 15th century. The Norman parish church dates from the 15th century and in 1649 the church was used as a prison during the English Civil War when the New Model Army Banbury mutineers were held there. Carvings left by some of the 340 prisoners can still be found in the church.

Between the 14th and 17th century Burford was important for its wool, in common with many towns in the Cotswolds. The Tolsey, located in the centre of Burford's High Street, was once the centre of the wool trade in the town and today is home to a small but interesting museum.

We specialise in British and Irish Art and hold twelve in-house exhibitions a year, each one accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. Our twice yearly Scottish Show features many of today’s leading contemporary Scottish artists. Our annual Irish exhibition creates great interest on both sides of the Irish sea and from this year will coincide with St. Patrick’s Day and the Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival, which is a great favourite with the Irish. We have handled the work of the much loved Cornish Naïve artist, Joan Gillchrest, for more than 16 years, and usually have a number of her works in stock.
