Improvements to Bassett Boomerang

Posted: 25/01/2007 11:19:54

Users of a popular shared taxi service in the Wootton Bassett area will have to ring a new phone number to book their trips from Monday 29th January.

The Bassett Boomerang is managed by Wiltshire County Council and gives people living in the Wootton Bassett area better access to public transport to enable them to travel into the centre to use shops and facilities as well as to connect with local buses including the improved Route 55 service between Wootton Bassett and Swindon.

The bookable shared taxi service complements existing public transport services in the area and offers an alternative to the car to people living in rural areas around Wootton Bassett.

From Monday 29 January the service will be operated by Bradies Taxis and Private Hire. Bradies won the contract after a competitive tendering process.

People wishing to book the service should ring 01249 890794. People ringing the old number will be directed to redial this new number by the previous booking staff.

Customers of the service will need to book before they can travel, as the Boomerang will only operate when bookings have been received.

Bookings should be made either by 4pm the day before travel for morning journeys, or two hours in advance of afternoon journeys.

The shared taxi service serves Tockenham, Bushton, Broad Town, Grittenham, Sodom, Clyffe Pypard, Cotmarsh and Thornhill.

Bassett Boomerang users can connect with bus services travelling on to Chippenham and Swindon, as the taxi connects with these buses in Wootton Bassett High Street.

The service operates from Monday to Saturday at a range of times, from early morning to early evening.

Tim Reynolds, who is responsible for managing the service for the county council, said: "Since the Bassett Boomerang started in November 2004 it has improved opportunities to travel into Wootton Bassett for people living in the areas surrounding the town. The service currently carries over 350 single journeys per month.

"People use it to travel to and from after-school clubs, dental appointments and for connections to and from the bus service to Swindon.

"A new vehicle will be provided for the service during the first week of operation and in time the service will be re-branded to form part of the new range of flexible services being provided by the county council. I hope people more people will call the new number and book themselves a trip on the Boomerang."
