Trowbridge regeneration scheme moves forward
Posted: 25/01/2007 11:20:30
A major project to regenerate a key part of the centre of Trowbridge has taken a significant step forward.
Wiltshire County Council and West Wiltshire District Council have both given Modus preferred developer status for the Waterside Project.
The decision was taken by members of the county council cabinet this week (Jan 23) and by members of West Wiltshire District Council's cabinet on January 10.
The Waterside project aims to breathe new life into seven acres of land along the River Biss with the creation of a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, restaurants and other leisure uses, new library, offices and high-quality apartments.
The proposed development will be built on land that is currently part of the County Hall complex, including the site of the current record office and Trowbridge library which are owned by the county council, together with the Court Street car park owned by the district council.
The county and district councils are currently working with Modus on ensuring the scheme can be delivered at no cost to either authority.
The county council is working in partnership with West Wiltshire District Council,Trowbridge Town Council, the Regional Development Agency and other local partners.
The waterside scheme is part of the Transforming Trowbridge plans that aim to regenerate the town centre over the next two decades.
Fleur de Rhe-Philipe, cabinet member for environment, transport and economic development, said: "The appointment of a preferred developer is a significant step forward for this major project.
"We shall now be working with our partners to ensure this scheme is affordable and becomes a reality."
Cllr Sarah Content, leader of West Wiltshire District Council, said: "The Waterside is a key part of Transforming Trowbridge, as it delivers facilities the town has been asking for over many years, including a multiplex cinema.
"I am very much looking forward to seeing their detailed proposals develop in due course. We are all keen to achieve the facilities that will make our county town provide real competition against the likes of Swindon and Bath and bring in additional economic benefits that can be spread throughout the rest of West Wiltshire."
Neal Dale, Modus director, said: "We are delighted to be chosen as preferred developer for this project, to provide a mixed use development commensurate with the town's status. The real work now begins and we are thoroughly looking forward to the challenge."
Steve Richards, head of operations for Wiltshire and Swindon at the South West RDA, said: "The delivery of such high-quality mixed use projects will attract more visitors, encourage further business growth and give the town centre a much needed economic boost. The Waterside scheme will act as a catalyst for further development over the next ten years and I look forward to seeing Trowbridge reach its full potential."
