Police urge residents to keep warm and don’t let burglars in – West Berkshire

Police in West Berkshire are urging residents to keep warm during this current cold snap, by making sure windows and doors are secure.

This follows a spate of seven burglaries in the Newbury area where offenders have gained entry via insecure windows and doors.

There were two in Andover Road, two in Floreat Gardens, two in Enborne Road and two in Westgate Road.

Det Insp Kev Smith, based at Newbury police station, said: “I’m looking to residents to take more care and responsibility to prevent some, if not all, of these incidents occurring.

“With the current spell of cold weather, there should be no real need to have windows and doors open in the home.

“Burglary leaves many people feeling frightened and violated by knowing that somebody has invaded their privacy. In order to tackle the problem we must all take responsibility.”

Romy Freiburghaus, Crime Reduction Adviser for West Berkshire, gives the following advice:

• Lock up - Make sure all doors and windows have locks and are always locked. Burglaries often happen on the spur of the moment through unlocked doors and windows.

• Don’t show it off - Make sure your television, computer and other smaller valuables such as purses and wallets cannot easily be seen from the window.

• Keep keys safe - Don’t leave keys lying around. Make sure they are in a safe place and out of sight of doors and windows – burglars can “fish” for keys through letterboxes, windows and cat-flaps.

• Are you insured? At least make sure your house insurance covers your most valuable items.
