Derbyshire police are warning motorists to be on their guard following a spate of thefts from vehicles in Heanor.

During the last week a number of cars have been broken into in the area and various items of property have been stolen.

Officers are keen to alert residents in the area to be extra vigilant to anyone acting suspiciously near to any vehicle and to make sure people do not leave anything of any value in their cars.

Sergeant Chris Dent, of Community Safety, said: "It is very important that motorists do as much as they can to reduce the risk of their vehicle being targeted by thieves.

"People should never leave anything of any value, such as handbags, satellite navigation systems and mobile phones, in their cars."

During one incident, a Ford Escort estate car was broken into sometime between 9pm on Thursday, January 25, and 6.30am on Friday, January 26, in Breach Road. A window was smashed and a handbag was stolen off the seat.

A Volkswagen Golf had its window smashed and a stereo and cash were stolen while it was parked in Rosewood Crescent sometime between 6.30pm on Thursday, January 25, and 7am on Friday, January 26.

A Ford Escort car had its window smashed while it was parked in Laceyfields Road. This happened sometime between 7.30pm on Wednesday, January 24, and 8am on Friday, January 26. A CD player and CDs were stolen from the vehicle.

Sometime between 8.30pm on Thursday, January 25, and 9.30am on Friday, January 26, a Ford Fiesta had its window smashed in Western Drive. A Sony MP3 player was taken from this car.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to any of these incidents to contact them on 0845 123 3333 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
