Over 220 attend Holocaust Memorial Event

Over 220 people attended an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day last Tuesday in Taunton, jointly organised for the third successive year by Somerset County Council and Somerset College.
The programme included a talk by Eva Schloss, a survivor of Auschwitz and Anne Frank’s posthumous stepsister. Seeing many students in the audience from the Castle School and Somerset College, Eva noted that the future is in the hands of the young generation and highlighted the task they share in shaping it.
She focussed her speech on her experiences of the last days of Auschwitz, the liberation of the camp by Soviet forces and her return to Holland.
Candles were then lit by representatives of the people and groups who make up the diverse community in Somerset and whose members from time to time experience discrimination. This was followed by a speech by the Chair of Equalities South West.
The chief executives of the college and Somerset County Council then laid a tear-shaped wreath of white lilies.
After the event people queued to sign the statement of commitment, pledging to do their utmost to prevent anything like the Holocaust happening again here or in any other place.
“The venue was absolutely full and this shows just how important this commemoration is for people here in Somerset. Everyone is really concerned not only about the past but about how we live in our local communities today and how we can really learn from history,” said Liz Payne-Ahmadi, Somerset County Council’s leading officer on equality and diversity.
Somerset County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Resources, Cllr Sam Crabb said: “It is extremely important that we continue to remember and that we all work together, on a regional, national and international scale, to ensure that this could never happen to anyone again.”
