Operation Sorrell Clamps Down On Anti-Social Behaviour In Stonehouse

For the past two months police have been carrying out an extensive operation to clamp down on anti-social behaviour in Stonehouse and surrounding areas.

Under Operation Sorrell police officers, PCSOs and Special Constables have carried out hundreds of extra hours of high visibility, and covert, foot patrol, in a bid to catch and deter offenders involved in crimes such as anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and underage drinking.

Patrols, which occurred mostly at weekends, targeted Stonehouse 'hot spots' highlighted by crime statistics and members of the public as being troublesome areas.

As a result of Operation Sorrell, during which police completed more than 700 hours of extra patrol duties, 37 arrests were made for a variety of offences, including assault, affray, theft, criminal damage and drug possession with intent to supply.

Officers also made 12 seizures of alcohol and two licensees were dealt with for selling alcohol to youngsters under the age of 18.

During the course of the operation police also required more than 220 people to stop and account for their movements.

Insp Eric Moore, of Stonehouse police, said Operation Sorrell had proved extremely effective in tackling problems of anti-social behaviour.

"This operation was designed to deter this kind of offending and catch those responsible for it," he said.

"We believe we enjoyed a degree of success in achieving both of these goals, while at the same time offering the wider public reassurance through a high profile policing presence.

"Despite the success of the operation we are not under the impression that anti-social behaviour has disappeared. We will be launching similar operations in the near future to keep up the momentum."

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour in Stonehouse is asked to contact local police on 0845 090 1234, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
