Firefighters save thatched property in Kent

Posted: 07/03/2007 17:59:39

Kent fire crews have been praised for successfully preventing a fire spreading at a thatched house in Hoo St Werburgh, Rochester and saving most of its contents.

Firefighters were called to the large detached house in Main Road, Hoo St Werburgh at 12.17 hrs this afternoon and discovered a serious fire in the central section of the thatched roof of the property.

Crews quickly set about tackling the blaze, forming fire breaks by cutting into the roof to prevent the fire spreading, while firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the building and covered the contents in protective sheeting. Furniture and property was then removed, saving it from fire damage.

At its height ten fire appliances, a height vehicle, a water unit and several support units attended the scene. Water from a swimming pool in the grounds of the house was also used to put out the fire.

Divisional Officer (Operations) Graham Gash said: “Fires in thatched properties are renowned for spreading rapidly and can be very difficult to save, however fire crews have worked tremendously hard, and thanks to aggressive firefighting action and a well-coordinated salvage operation, they managed to save around two thirds of the building and virtually all its contents.”

Firefighters will be working in to this evening and possibly throughout the night, cutting away and damping down, to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
