Holiday Crackdown on Anti-Social Behaviour

Posted: 11/06/2007 12:39:41

Police in the Matson and Linden areas of Gloucester will be out in force this summer to help ensure residents can enjoy the holiday period.

While many are taking a break, the area's Safer Community Team will be working hard to stamp out anti-social behaviour.

Traditionally, complaints of this type of incident rise once the school term ends. Local officers are determined householders and workers won't have to put up with obscene language, criminal damage and other such anti-social acts and have therefore launched Operation Brian.

Involving specific under-cover and high-visibility patrols, on foot, in cars and on bikes, it will also make use of the Police CCTV so offenders are caught on camera, both visually and audibly. It will run throughout the holiday period but is being launched now to 'set the tone'.

Community Beat Officer for Linden, PC Dominic Everiss said: "We have made great strides in tackling anti-social behaviour in Linden and Matson and the number of such incidents has been reduced by 141 since January, compared with the same period last year. However, consultation with local residents has confirmed that anti-social behaviour does still impact on quality of life here and we are intent on tackling it further.

"Whether it's dropping litter, causing damage or using obscene language, we'll be taking measured but positive action this summer against offenders in all incidents."

He added: "We're appealing for all parents and guardians to work with us by making sure they know where their children are, who they are with, what they're doing and when they're coming home. This will help keep the children safe while improving the quality of life of all residents."

Police work closely with partner agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour. Action taken ranges from arrests and the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices for Disorder to warning letters, mediation, Acceptable Behaviour Contracts and applications for Anti-Social Behaviour Orders.

Anti-social behaviour was identified by Linden residents as one of the three main priorities they want Police to address; the others are criminal damage to vehicles and parking offences.

Since January 2007, more than 30 offenders have been arrested in the Linden area.

35 vehicles have been towed away for not having tax and/ or insurance.

115 £30 parking fines have been issued.
