Police horses on streets of Swindon

Posted: 03/07/2007 09:17:16

Three police horses named Redland, Broadmead and Monty went on patrol with police officers in Swindon at the weekend as part of Operation Diamond.

On Friday 29th and Saturday 30th June, proactive, preventative and enforcement policing activity was carried out between 9pm and 4am in Swindon town centre. Police Officers, both in uniform and in plain clothes, were deployed to specific locations within the town centre area along with colleagues on horseback from Avon & Somerset Police who had been drafted in to enhance public reassurance.

Operation Diamond is a proactive initiative by Wiltshire Police to address the perceived problems associated with the late night-time economy in Swindon town centre. The aim of the operation is to create a safe and friendly environment for members of the public in the town centre. The use of the police horses has supported the normal measures which include the Dispersal Order, increased use of the CCTV van and hand operated video cameras.

The operation follows on from Wiltshire Police's seven-month long Operation XS campaign which was designed to press home the message about sensible drinking and to further crack down on alcohol related violence and disorder.

Speaking after the operation, Inspector Ian Bamber said: "We were delighted to have Redland, Broadmead and Monty with us this weekend. The horses have been an additional resource to promote high visibility policing and public reassurance in the town centre. Their imposing presence created a talking point amongst the people out and about on those evenings and they were supportive of this innovative measure.

"We want people to enjoy Swindon's vibrant night-time economy in a safe and responsible way. New initiatives such as this are always welcome if they create a safer environment for all who work, visit and socialise in the town."
