Folkestone car crash demo night

Posted: 17/07/2007 15:37:17

Research has shown that one in five drivers crash within the first year of driving, resulting in the deaths of around 500 young people on Kent's roads in the last three years.

To help tackle this problem, a live demonstration depicting a serious car crash is to be staged by emergency services at Sainsbury's Car Park, Park Farm Road in Folkestone on the evening of Saturday 21 July between 7.30pm and 9pm.

The evening aims to educate young people on the potentially horrific consequences of being involved in a serious road traffic collision and to encourage young drivers and passengers to be responsible for their own and others' safety while driving.

Folkestone Fire Station's blue watch crew manager Andy Harris said: "Our crews regularly attend road traffic collisions, and it is particularly harrowing when a young person loses their life in such tragic, and often avoidable, circumstances."

Research shows that peer pressure can encourage bad driving and result in drivers 'showing off' to their passengers. The mere presence of young passengers, together with the distraction of conversation can be distracting to inexperienced drivers who should be paying close attention to the road.

Young drivers are more likely to seek thrills from driving fast and cornering at high speed than older drivers, and may be reluctant to drive under the speed limit for fear of 'losing face' in front of friends. However with less experience at identifying potential hazards and assessing risk, new drivers, especially males, are more likely to be involved in high-speed crashes, single vehicle crashes involving losing control, crashes in the dark and when overtaking and negotiating bends.

Crew manager Harris continued: "Our experience tells us that young people rarely attend safety events such as open days so this initiative aims to take road safety education to a car park where they tend to gather in the evening.

"We hope by showing the shocking scenes that fire crews, ambulance crews and the police confront every day will really challenge attitudes towards safe driving, be it as the driver or as a passenger."
