Warning to owners of older vehicles – Bracknell

Posted: 31/07/2007 17:54:00

Police in Bracknell are warning owners of older vehicles to take extra security precautions, following a spate of car thefts in Bracknell.

Insp Michael Squire, deputy commander of Bracknell Forest police area, said: “Over recent months, we’ve seen an increase in the number of older-type vehicles being stolen in the Birch Hill and Great Hollands areas.

“The cars being targeted are predominantly Volkswagens and Vauxhalls, with registrations from F through to L.

“We think these vehicles may be chosen because they are relatively easy to break into, so we are encouraging owners to target-harden their cars.

“In conjunction with Halfords in Skimped Hill Lane, Bracknell, we are offering some practical help to motorists. Halfords will give you a 20-per-cent reduction on all vehicle locks, on production of this article.

“We suspect that these older cars are being stolen for use in crime. Not only are the owners faced with the loss of their vehicles, but in some cases they also receive fines after the vehicles set off speed cameras, which can cause them considerable inconvenience.”

Anyone with any information about vehicle crime in the Birch Hill and Great Hollands areas is asked to contact police on 0845 8 505 505. If you don’t want to speak to police or give your name, please call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
