First weekend of Operation Oasis hailed a success

Posted: 06/08/2007 17:08:33

Members of the Oxford Road neighbourhood policing team have hailed the first weekend of Operation Oasis as a success.

The first part of the operation, which aims to tackle drugs, violent crime and street drinking in the Oxford Road area of Reading, ran from Friday 27th July to Tuesday 31st July.

* Five arrests were made: one for possession of drugs, one for theft of a credit card, one for theft of a driver’s licence, one for a public order offence and one for a fail to appear warrant.
* 50 stop and searches were carried out
* A 15-year-old girl, who often goes missing, was found and returned to her family in the Tilehurst area.

PC Richard Carter, Neighbourhood Specialist Officer for the Oxford Road South neighbourhood team, said: “The first weekend was a great success, with the team working really hard to get some good results. The issues that the operation was set up to tackle, such as the street drinkers and people causing anti-social behaviour, were dealt with robustly.

“The community has been aware of our high visibility patrolling and this has been reflected with the useful information that they have given us. Using this information, as well as the information gained from the street survey, we have used the resources available to us to target the issues highlighted.

“The operation is very much a team effort, with everyone suggesting ways in which we can tackle the issues that have been raised.

“The operation is set to continue over the coming weekends.”
