Ludlow Open Day Set to be Big Success

Posted: 07/09/2007 13:26:05

South Shropshire residents will once again get the chance to find out what their local police are all about as Ludlow Station opens its doors for the second time.

Visitors will get a rare insight into the role of the police in keeping communities safe and tackling crime during the last of a series of Open Days on Sunday, September 16th.

Ludlow was selected to host the event because of its space, but people from across South Shropshire are urged to come along, including Craven Arms, Church Stretton, Bishop's Castle and Cleobury Mortimer.

Following the success of last year’s event, which is believed to have been the first time the station opened its doors to the public, organisers are hoping for an even better turn out this time around.

Constable Dave Coffey, who has been the main organiser of the event, said there would be something for the whole family to enjoy.

“Although the focus of the day is for people to find out about the police, it will also be fun with lots of attractions,” he said.

“One of the most popular attractions last year was the police dogs and a handler will be back this time. Various police vehicles will be out in the back yard for people to look at and we’ll also have a display of police uniform and kit.

“We’ll also be taking a trip into the past with a display of some old police equipment use by bobbies many years ago.

“So many people told us how much they enjoyed last year’s open day and were asking us to hold another, so we have done.”

There will be a fingerprinting room and a police mountain bike will also be on display. Cyclists are also urged to bring their own bikes along, with the first 50 receiving a free SmartWater security marking kit.

Hundreds of people enjoyed last year’s event, which was blessed with sunny weather. And PC Coffey said an early bid for sunshine this time around had already been put in.

“We were very lucky with the weather last year, but a lot of the attractions will be inside the station so people don’t need to worry about the chance of any rain,” he added.

“We want to give people a real taste of who their local police are and what we are all about, while keeping it a fun outing for all ages.

“We’ll also have the Property Office open so people can see the varied collection of things that have been found, seized or handed in to police, and there will be various crime prevention displays and competitions for children.

“There will also be lots off police and community support officers for people to talk to about any concerns or ask for advice if they want to.”

Shropshire Fire and Rescue are also due to attend with a display on fire safety and light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

The Open Day will run from 11am until 3pm and everyone in South Shropshire is welcome to go along.

Events have been held across the Force area this summer, including Herefordshire and Worcestershire, to mark the 40th anniversary of West Mercia Constabulary. Thousands of people across Shropshire have already enjoyed open days at Shrewsbury, Market Drayton, Bridgnorth and Oswestry.

“Everyone involved really enjoyed last year’s event and we’re all looking forward to it this time,” said PC Coffey.
