New national bus concession from April 2008

Posted: 04/02/2008 13:00:18

From 1 April 2008, people in Cheltenham will benefit from a new bus pass, giving them free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England. People aged sixty or over and eligible disabled people are entitled to the free travel. The new national scheme will replace Cheltenham's current concessionary scheme which allows pass holders to have free travel within the county.

The benefits of the new national pass will mean that people can travel anywhere in England between 9.30am and 11pm, Monday to Friday and all day on weekends and bank holidays. Within the county, the passes can be used at the earlier time of 9am until 11pm and all day on weekends and bank holidays.

All current bus pass holders will receive their new pass by post, in time for the launch. People who don’t currently hold a pass and believe they may be entitled to one can contact the council’s concessionary fares team on 01242 262626, or by emailing buspasses@cheltenham.gov.uk

Councillor Rob Garnham, cabinet member for environment said: ‘’ It is important that we both encourage people to use public transport and also to help people get out and about. This new concessionary fares scheme meets both those objectives and I am pleased the new scheme can begin in April. We already know the county wide scheme is immensely popular and I am sure that many more people will take up the offer of free travel throughout England.’’

Grahame Lewis, strategic director for environment said: ‘’The introduction of this scheme will bring further positive benefits for those members of our community who qualify. The costs associated with the initiative are very significant but we are doing all we can to ensure that central government recognises this and rewards us appropriately.’’

Cheltenham residents with a qualifying disability can also apply for concessionary taxi vouchers, offering a limited number of discounted journeys which begin or end in the borough.
