Fire safety warning issued to Hoo residents

Posted: 27/02/2008 16:22:15

With up to a 1,000 properties in Hoo, near Rochester, affected by a temporary loss of gas to their homes, Kent Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to take extra care when using other methods to heat their home and to cook.

Head of Community Safety Stuart Skilton said: “People may not be familiar with using alternative heaters or cookers, so I would ask them to consider the additional risk of fire that these items could pose if used incorrectly.

“My advice is to ensure any such equipment is working properly and safely before use. All heaters should be kept away from curtains and furnishings and should never be used to dry clothes as this is a major fire hazard.”

He added: “Also make sure that you have a working smoke alarm fitted to each floor of your home and test it regularly to make sure it will alert you should fire break out.”

Follow these further fire safety tips to protect yourself from the risk of fire in the home:

• Heaters should be keep away from curtains and furnishings and should never be used to dry clothes
• Heaters are ideally located backed up against a wall. If possible secure them to a wall to stop them from falling over
• Portable gas heaters should have the cylinders stored and changed OUTSIDE, or in a well-ventilated atmosphere.
• Both gas and paraffin heaters should only be used in a well-ventilated area.
• Paraffin should be stored outside in a metal container

Open fires:
• Never use petrol of paraffin to light your fire
• Sweep the chimney before use if you haven’t used it for some time
• Always keep a fire guard in front of a burning fire
• Extinguish the fire before going to bed or leaving the house
