Wokingham Neighbourhood update

Posted: 03/04/2008 16:20:07

Police Community Support Officer (PSCO) Roy Sully provides the latest from Wokingham Town Centre;

We have been focusing our time this month on being proactive and tackling shoplifting and attempted shoplifters in the town centre.

We have high-visibility patrols in the area and have been using stop and search to ensure that thieves are not getting away unnoticed.

Shop staff are being encouraged to make full use of their town centre radios and the town centre CCTV is now fully restored and in full use at all times.

This hard work has paid off and we have had a number of successes; there have been arrests of suspected shoplifters recently, involving two of the biggest stores in the town.

Anti-social behaviour has arisen in some areas. In Latimer Road Recreation Ground groups of youths have been gathering to drink alcohol and have been trying to persuade adults to purchase alcohol on their behalf from a nearby local store.

We have also had problems with anti social behaviour in Elms Road multi-storey car-park as well on the derelict warehouse in Ashville Way business estate where empty former crown lift trucks have been vandalised.

Officers are aware of these problems and are dealing with them through liaison with the local Environmental Health Officers. The current owner of the warehouse has also been told to maintain and secure the warehouse and make it less inviting to vandals.

PCSOs recently supported a bike marking event in the town centre organised by the Community Wardens. This had a good response from the public and gave us the opportunity to give out general crime prevention advice.

Over the months we have managed to build up a good relationship the local learning disability support groups and the elderly residents of a sheltered housing project near the town centre.

We have visited the residents to explain the role of the PCSOs, provide advice and information on personal and home security and discuss the reporting of hate crime.
