Creating enterprise for Princetown
Posted: 14/04/2008 12:35:49
Building has begun on Princetown's new centre for creative enterprise, which is due to open in autumn this year.
The £1.7m Duchy Square Centre for Creativity has been funded by Devon County Council, the South West of England Regional Development Agency, the Duchy of Cornwall and Objective 2 European Regional Development Funding.
The development will offer advice and support for new creative businesses, and promote work from up and coming local artists. It will also house 17 small workshops and offices, a gallery for arts and crafts and a teaching studio in the heart of the Dartmoor town.
The aim of the project is to regenerate the area by supporting local businesses across several key sectors, including creative industries, farming, food and tourism. It will also provide a tourist attraction, giving local creative practitioners an outlet to promote and sell their work, helping to boost the local economy.
Councillor Humphrey Temperley, Executive Member for Strategic Planning and Regional Affairs, said: "The Duchy Square development is an exciting and landmark achievement for Princetown and Dartmoor. It will ensure a thriving local business community and attract more tourists by showcasing the best arts and crafts. Developing local skills and supporting sustainable business development are critical to ensuring the long term success of the project, and enhancing the area's potential."
Steve Humphreys, Objective 2 Priority Manager, said: "In the final year of the programme Objective 2 is pleased to be able to support a project that will regenerate a run down area of Princetown. The replacement of derelict buildings with a sustainable and innovative new development will breathe new life into the village and the surrounding area."
Chris Gregory, Deputy Steward for the Duchy of Cornwall on Dartmoor, added: "Duchy Square is a hugely symbolic development in the heart of the village. It has taken a determined effort by many people to ensure that this new opportunity comes to fruition and I believe that the building heralds the start of a very exciting opportunity for the people of Princetown and the wider arts and crafts community on Dartmoor."
Tracy Hill, South West Regional Manager of Integria Ltd, operators of Duchy Square, said: "Our vision for the Duchy Square Centre for Creativity is that it will become a hub both physically and virtually, working in partnership to develop a network of talent and nurture a community of creativity."
Dave Wainwright, Rok Exeter Area Leader, who are building the Centre, commented: "We are very pleased to be involved in this innovative project for Princetown. The design and final use of the building make it a particularly interesting scheme to work on, so we're looking forward to creating an inviting space for artists, visitors and businesses alike."
The project is using environmental construction techniques to minimise its carbon footprint. It will use recycled products where possible and the building design has been specified to have minimal environmental impact due to its location within a conservation area of Dartmoor National Park.
