Police clamp down at school crossings

Posted: 15/04/2008 13:17:38

Thames Valley Police in Maidenhead are warning drivers that if they fail to stop at school crossings they could be issued with three penalty points, a fine of up to £1,000 and the loss of their license.

The advice comes after a driver was recently prosecuted and fined £70, given three penalty points on his license and ordered to pay £60 costs, for failing to stop at a school crossing.

PC Bob Wade, Road Safety Constable, said: “School Crossing Patrollers carry out a vital role in getting our children to school safely. I want to warn drivers that we are cracking down on drivers who ignore this law and they will be summonsed to court for failing to stop.

“I have spoken to all the patrol persons and know exactly what evidence is required for a successful prosecution. These crossings are clearly signed with amber flashing lights and therefore it should come as no surprise to drivers when they are signalled to stop. Fortunately the crossing patrol man recorded the number of the vehicle and supplied the police with an independent witness.

“I find it unbelievable that some drivers are so impatient that they will risk the safety of school children rather than wait for two minutes at a school crossing.”
