Re-Opening of Refurbished Police Station

Posted: 23/04/2008 17:25:02

Shifnal Police Station will be officially reopened to the public on Monday (28 April) following an extensive programme of refurbishment.

And alongside the vastly improved facilities for both the public and officers who work there, new volunteer counter clerks are also in place, allowing greater access for people to report incidents in person.

Work has been ongoing for the past year to completely redesign the ground floor of the building to ensure it complies with legislation under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

This includes better conference facilities, easier access for those with disabilities, DDA compliant toilets and interview rooms and a new glass frontage to the building.

The station remained open to the public during the work, with people able to access the building and its officers via the nearby side door.

Current Mayor of Shifnal, Councillor Tom Jones, will unveil a plaque officially reopening the station on Monday afternoon. It will be one of his final official duties as Mayor before stepping down at the end of this month.

Pam Broome, Facilities Manager for Shropshire Division, said the new station was an asset to the town and would allow the public even better access to their local officers.

“We are delighted that Councillor Jones accepted our invitation to carry out the official reopening, as he has always been very supportive to the local officers and works closely with them to continue improving the quality of life for the people of Shifnal,” she said.

“Shifnal is the last of three stations in Shropshire to be reopened following extensive refurbishment, the other two being Much Wenlock on our division and Newport on Telford Division. The work across the three stations cost around £295,000.

“Work on the stations was vital to ensure that they complied with the Disability Discrimination Act, with access for all members of the public now vastly improved.

“Shifnal now has an open plan, modern reception area with officers working just behind the front counter, improved public toilet facilities and a new conference room on the ground floor which is more accessible to those with disabilities.

“New volunteers have begun as counter clerks, which means improved access for residents to report incidents in person. Until now, this was not always possible if officers have not been in the station and were out on patrol or at an incident.

“The 24-hour telephone outside which connects to our switchboard will remain, allowing people to contact the police when the station does not have counter staff on duty.”

Other special guests invited to attend the event on Monday include members of Shifnal Crime Prevention Panel, PACT, Shifnal Youth Council, local councillors, Neighbourhood Watch volunteers, Tracy Johnson from Bridgnorth Community Safety Partnership and Mrs Meriel Rose Afia, former High Sheriff of Shropshire.

Shropshire’s Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Guy Rutter, will also be attending along with other members of the Command Team and members of West Mercia Police Authority, which paid for the work.

Sergeant Mark Rock, in charge of policing for the Shifnal area and based in the town, said the station now offered a much better working environment for officers as well as benefiting the public.

He said: “The new open plan layout means most of the officers can work in the one area and the new conference room gives us a great place to meet members of the community such as councillors to discuss policing in the area.

“Shifnal has very low levels of crime and my officers are committed to keeping it one of the safest places in Shropshire to live and work.

“We work hard to engage with our residents and having the volunteers staffing the front counter will improve this further.”
