Diversity Day

Posted: 30/04/2008 18:07:11

Last Thursday (25/04) saw West Berkshire Council host the Thames Valley Police Diversity Day in Newbury.

The event was attended by police officers, police staff, council staff and a number of representatives from a wide variety of organisations that represent the six strands of diversity; age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and disability.

Among the organisations present at the day were; Age Concern, Thames Valley Police Gay Police Association, representatives from the Muslim community, the Force Chaplain, and West Berkshire Citizen Advocacy Service (WEBCAS), a self advocacy group for adults with learning disabilities.

The day provided an opportunity for people to talk to the various organisations, find out more about what they do and discuss ways in which they can work together to provide the best service they can to their communities.

The day was very well attended and the feedback received very positive.

Mustafa Chaudhary, secretary of Reading Muslim Council, said: “This was an excellent event. Well done to all who clearly worked hard to make it the success it was. I think face-to-face interactive events like these are of enormous benefit to all who attend. The buzzing and friendly atmosphere you manage to create really works well”.

Supt Chris Shead, Local Police Area Commander, said:” The diversity day was a big success. It stemmed from a desire to improve the quality of service we offer the community by increasing understanding amongst police and partner staff. The day represented an opportunity for staff to interact with people from various minority groups and learn from their experiences. It was well attended and the feedback I have received suggests that everyone involved really benefited from the conversations they had.”
