Cycle Exeter gears up with new funding

Posted: 02/05/2008 01:25:05

Cycle Exeter has won praise and received confirmation that it will continue for the next three years with support from Cycling England.

The project, which is funded by Cycling England, following a joint submission by Devon County Council and Exeter City Council, aims to get more people cycling, more safely and more often. It has done just that and since it started in 2005 there has been a 25% increase in cycling in Exeter.

Around 18km of new or improved routes have been completed in and around the city, and over 1,200 children have received Bikeability Training in Exeter.

Philip Darnton, Chairman of Cycling England, said: "Our first three years of working together have been both rewarding and enjoyable; the sense of commitment throughout the whole team is very evident, and with it the enthusiasm which everyone demonstrates. A great deal has been achieved in the past three years, and we are confident that the next phase will be equally successful."

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: "We're proud and pleased to receive this praise and continued support from Cycling England. This additional backing recognises how successful Cycle Exeter has already been and the results are there for all to see.

"The project is helping more people cycle to school, work and in their own freetime. Cycling is a simple but effective way of tackling congestion and improving air quality, and hopefully the whole of Devon can benefit over the next three years."

Cycling England is yet to consider Devon County Council's submission to make Devon a Cycling County, as part of the new 750,000 funding for this year and provisionally for the next two years. Cycle Exeter is one of six Cycling Demonstration Towns around the country described by Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly in January as "hugely impressive".

Zsolt Schuller, Cycle Exeter Project Manager, said: "We've shown that we can make a difference to the local environment with our work so far. We want to make it easier and safer for everyone to enjoy cycling and with funding for the next three years we're delighted that this work can continue in Devon."
