Weobley pupils do their bit for environment

Posted: 20/05/2008 19:49:17

Weobley schools have become the latest in the county to gain a Streetscene charter from Herefordshire Council.

Pupils from Weobley primary and high school joined forces with local residents to do their bit for the environment by carrying out a litter pick in the village.

Villagers Pru Lloyd and Amy Hewitt joined in the litter pick, which aimed to show pupils how litter problems can exist even in a picturesque village like Weobley.

Herefordshire Council supported the schools by providing litter picking equipment, gloves and reflective vests.

The schools have been given Streetscene signs for placing around the playgrounds and will also both receive litter bins.

Weobley schools are two of a staggering 86 per cent in the county to be registered as Eco-Schools and both of them have received the highest award possible which is the green flag. The two schools work closely together to retain their Eco-School status.

Jane Denny, Eco-School co-ordinator, said: “We are lucky in Weobley to have people like Pru and Amy who regularly pick up litter in the village and prevent it from becoming a major problem.

“However, we did find several bags loads of rubbish even on our short litter pick from the schools down into the centre of the village and the pupils certainly got the message that they shouldn’t drop litter because it will either create an eyesore or someone will have to be paid to remove it,” she added.
