Cycle Fun Run for Broseley youngsters
Posted: 12/06/2008 01:41:39
Youngsters in Broseley are set to take part in a cycle ride with local police officers aimed at promoting a healthy and fun lifestyle
The event, which will take place on August 5th, has been organised by the town’s Local Police Team, Broseley Boxing Club and the Shropshire Army Cadet Force (ACF).
Covering about 10 miles in total, the route will take the officers and young people from the John Wilkinson School in Coalport Road and along the old railway line to Bridgnorth, where participants will be provided with lunch at Severn Hall before cycling back.
Constable Allan Hand, local officer for Broseley, said he hoped the exercise would show those taking part that they could be healthy while also having fun.
“The kids will also be able to collect sponsorship if they want to put towards the organisation they have come from, such as local youth clubs or the boxing club,” he said.
“Cycling is great exercise and also lots of fun to do, especially with a group of other people. The exercise will be fully supervised by local police and community support officers and also supported by the Shropshire ACF.
“We will have a skills test at the school first and all the bikes will be checked to ensure they safe. The group will then head off along the old railway line to Bridgnorth, which by the time of the exercise should have been designated as an official cycle path.
“There will then be lunch provided, before we head back to Broseley. It should be a good day out for all those involved and they will also get the chance to get to know their local officers.”
The minimum age to take part is 10 and anyone under the age of 16 will need the consent of a parent of guardian.
Organisers have also joined forces with the local council, with the Mayor and Deputy Mayors of Broseley due to join in the cycle on a tandem bike.
“This is a real community exercise to help kids get fit while having fun, while also breaking down barriers between young people and their local police,” added PC Hand.
Local officers already run a successful boxing club, which brought youngsters together to show them there was more to life than hanging around on the streets.
