Test-purchase operation
Posted: 12/06/2008 01:43:37
Officers from Thames Valley Police and Cherwell District Council conducted an under-age alcohol test purchasing operation on Thursday 29 May across the Bicester and South Cherwell area.
The operation saw underage teenage volunteers, accompanied by undercover licensing officers, enter licensed premises and off licences and attempt to buy alcohol.
14 premises visited were visited and all of them passed, refusing to sell alcohol to the volunteers. 11 were tested in Bicester, two in Yarnton and one in Kidlington.
Neighbourhood Special Officer for Bicester Town, PC Nicki Entwistle, who led the operation for the police said: “Along with the council and Pubwatch, we have been working hard to stop children getting hold of alcohol.
“In both Kidlington and Bicester, alcohol-related anti-social behaviour has been nominated as one of our policing priorities by the public.
“These results would suggest that the message is getting across to licensed premises that it is not acceptable to serve alcohol to under-18s. We would like to congratulate all those that refused our volunteers. However, they need to keep up these high standards: this is just the first of many regular operations.”
Cherwell District Council’s portfolio holder for Community Health and Environment, Councillor George Reynolds, said: “Partnership working between the council and the police is key to our priority of providing a safer, healthier district.
“This innovative operation has shown that we’re making significant progress especially in this vital area of illegal alcohol sales. We look forward to mounting similar joint operations with the police again.”
