fire station to host community safety open day

Posted: 28/07/2008 15:33:41

A fun-packed programme of activities will be on offer at Thames-side Fire Station’s open day on Saturday 2 August in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet.

The event, with a community safety theme, will offer a full itinerary of demonstrations and activities, as well as fun for all the family between 11am and 4pm.

Entry to the public is free and there will be a varied programme including a burning room that will show how quickly a domestic fire can develop and the dangers of not having a working smoke alarm fitted. With accidental cooking fires still the main cause of fires in the home, visitors will be able to see the devastating effects of putting water on to a cooking oil fire, with chip pan fire demonstrator.

There will be a rescue dog display from Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s Urban Search and Rescue Team. Fire crews will be recreating a road traffic collision rescue and the line-rescue team will be carrying out a high-rise rescue.

Plenty of attractions will be on offer for families including a bouncy castle, face painting, a penalty shoot out and much more.

Community safety officers will be on hand to discuss the benefits of having a free home fire safety check, a service which includes fitting smoke alarms for free in homes across Kent. These checks take about 20 minutes and include tips on night-time routines, cooking safely with oil or fat, the dangers of smoking materials, care with candles, electrical safety and planning escape routes in the event of fire.

A range of partner agencies will be attending on the day including Kent Police, Royal National Lifeboat Institute and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Thames-sides Station Manager Steve Dunn said: “We are really looking forward to the day and welcome the involvement of our partner agencies. Together, I am sure we can make it a fun and exciting day during which we will be getting a number of safety messages across to the community. This will help improve the safety and quality of life for the people of Gravesend and the surrounding areas.”

Refreshments, including a barbeque, will be available.
