40 drivers educated on seat belt safety

Posted: 29/07/2008 22:10:50

Over 140 drivers were stopped in four road safety checks carried out in Windsor and Maidenhead last week.

Officers from Taplow Roads Policing base, Road Safety Officers from the Windsor and Maidenhead Royal Borough Council and Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership constable, Bob Wade, carried out the checks to look at all aspects of road safety.

The first two checks took place on Tuesday 22 July. Between 8am and 10am they were on the A4 Bath Road, Maidenhead and between 10.30am and 12pm they were on the Imperial Road, Windsor. Another check was carried out on the A4 Bath Road between 8am and 10am the following day, before officers moved on to Stafferton Road between 10.30am and 12pm.

Over the two days 127 people were issued with £30 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) for not wearing their seatbelt and 12 were given £60 FPN with three penalty points for using their mobile phone. One man was arrested for driving while over the limit and two were stopped for having defective tyres.

Those issued with seatbelt FPNs were asked if they would like to take part in a seatbelt awareness course that was being run free of charge by DriveTech rather than pay the fine. The course was held yesterday evening (28/7) and 40 drivers attended.

PC Bob Wade said: “These road checks will continue, as it is clear by the results that not only is the safety aspect of wearing a seatbelt not getting through, but drivers are openly disregarding the law. Wearing a seatbelt is not an option – it is a must and it is very disappointing to see so many people not wearing their seatbelt.

“I am pleased that on this occasion we were able to offer education to those that were willing to listen. As for the drink driver at that time in the morning, there can be no excuse.”
