Visit to fete keeps couple safe from blaze

Posted: 30/07/2008 15:25:29

A retired couple believe a smoke alarm - fitted by Kent Fire and Rescue Service during a home fire safety check - saved their lives after it alerted them to a fire in their Rochester home.

The couple learnt about the free home fire safety check service when they attended a school fete in Aylesford last summer. Mrs Calder said: “At first I didn’t think we really needed it as we already had a smoke alarm in the house. But the fire crew explained that we needed a working smoke alarm on each floor and when they come round, they fitted them for us for free.

The device, fitted last September, woke Mr and Mrs Calder in the early hours of Friday morning and alerted them to a small electrical blaze in a fridge freezer in the hallway of their house on the Esplanade.

Due to the position of the alarm, the fire was detected at the very earliest stages of development, before it could cause extensive damage and put the couples’ lives and property at further risk.

Mrs Calder said: “I am so grateful to Kent Fire and Rescue Service, because the alarm that went off was one that they fitted. Without it I dread to think what would have happened - the fumes from the fire were awful and if it had spread to the bottom of the stairs it would have blocked our means of escape.”

“I would urge everyone to take up the offer of a free home fire safety check. It only took half an hour and I really believe it saved our lives!”

The free checks take about 30 minutes to carry out and firefighters will visit your home to identify potential fire hazards and fit if required free 10-year smoke alarms. They will give home fire safety advice and help you make an escape plan should fire break out in your home.
