Rochester revellers to witness road safety demo

Posted: 13/08/2008 16:50:51

Young revellers enjoying a Friday night out in Rochester this week will witness first-hand the sobering realities of being involved in a serious road traffic collision, when the emergency services stage a mock crash in Boar Lane.

The aim of the event is to encourage young drivers and passengers to be responsible for their own and others’ safety while driving. Research indicates that young people are more likely to take more risks than experienced drivers, killing themselves, their passengers and other road users. In fact, a quarter of the convictions for causing death by dangerous driving are for drivers under 20 years old.

Further cause for concern is the growing trend of young drivers posting videos of their reckless and dangerous driving on social networking sites like YouTube, as highlighted on this weeks’ Tonight programme. Presenter Quentin Willson was calling for these videos to be banned due to them encouraging more risk-taking behaviour.

The event is part of Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s multi-agency road safety campaign ‘Operation Carmageddon’, involving Medway Council, Medway Police, Kent Air Ambulance and St John’s Ambulance Service. Fire crews from Strood will be assisting with the removal of mock casualties from a wrecked car on the night.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s Education Manager Alexa Kersting-Woods said: “Our experience tells us that young people rarely attend safety events such as open days so this campaign aims to take road safety education right to the places where they are already gathered, for example car parks, schools and night-spots. We hope that this event will help those who come and witness it keep themselves and their peers safer on Kent’s roads.”

Medway Council’s Principal Road Safety Officer Su Negus said: “Medway Council supports any initiative that will raise awareness to all road users of the risks they needlessly take.”

Sergeant Bob Bangle said, ‘Similar events which have run recently have been very successful and we are pleased that it has been possible to organise another to reach other members of the community. This event supports Kent police’s Safer Summer campaign which aims to educate drivers and encourage people to enjoy the summer without taking unnecessary risks, which could put themselves and others in danger. ‘Carmageddon’ enables us to demonstrate first hand the tragedy and devastation that can be caused by dangerous driving.”

Owner of The Casino Rooms nightclub and chairman of the Safer Medway initiative, Aaron Stone, said: “I am happy top support this event as it is sad that so many young people are killed on the Kent’s roads.”
