Seeking Mystery Owners

Posted: 04/09/2008 15:06:21

A firm of property surveyors is trying to trace the owners of two pieces of land in Minchinhampton where affordable homes could one day be built.

Bristol-based Savills were commissioned by Stroud District Council to examine possible sites for new homes in the parish. Savills examined 29 sites initially, but after examining issues such as access, location, archaeology and land use, found that only 10 might be suitable.

"We have written to the landowners to find out if they might be willing to sell," says Nick Matthews, an Associate Director of the company. "If they aren't, then there is no point in looking at those pieces of land." The problem, he explains, is that the owners of two sites cannot be found.

"We're hoping that someone with local knowledge will be able to tell us who they are," he says. "One site lies on Cirencester Road, next to Mandeville House; the other is between Besbury Park and Hyde Tyning."

Of the 10 possible sites, 9 are 'planning exception sites' - those where development would not normally be permitted, but where development of affordable homes could be considered.

A public exhibition showing which sites are in the running and the approach that has been adopted will be held in The Porch Room, Minchinhampton on Friday 5th September (2pm - 8pm) and Saturday 6th September (10am - 3pm). Representatives from Savills will be on hand to answer any questions. All feedback will be greatly appreciated.

A study by Gloucestershire Rural Community Council found there to be a shortage of 20 affordable homes in the parish. Meanwhile, Stroud District Council has 67 applicants on its housing waiting list who have listed Minchinhampton as their first choice location for housing.

The aim of the Council is to ensure that local people in housing need are able to secure a home locally. Any new homes would actually be built by a housing association rather than the Council. Depending on the outcome of the study, further work may follow on those sites considered most suitable, leading to a second consultation exercise on actual proposals. Any planning applications will only be made once both consultation exercises have been completed.
