Police Warning Following Numberplate Thefts
Posted: 06/09/2008 11:41:35
Officers from the Vehicle Crime Unit in Telford have issued a warning following a recent increase in the theft of numberplates in the town.
In the two most recent incidents numberplates were stolen off vehicles parked in Woodside and Coalbrookdale and police have warned the individuals responsible that they run the very real risk of being traced.
Detective Sergeant Ernie Locke from the Vehicle Crime Unit said:
“We have seen an increase in this type of theft of late and I would like to warn offenders that we are taking them extremely seriously. We have a number of ways that we can trace the individuals responsible for these thefts.
“The stolen numberplates are often fixed to other vehicles that are then used to commit an offence when a vehicle makes off from a service station without paying for fuel. I would warn offenders that we are working with garages right across the Borough to track vehicles involved in incidents such as this and a description of each and every vehicle and its occupants is now kept on the Police National Computer (PNC) for future reference.
“The details of each stolen numberplate is also placed on the PNC and these are then automatically accessed by our ANPR (automatic numberplate recognition) team. This means that the ANPR computer will alert officers when a licensed registration number is read that does not match the vehicle it is actually being displayed by.
“Anyone identified by the ANPR computer or found to be responsible for these thefts should be warned that arrests may follow and that we will deal with any offences found in a robust manner.
“We would ask anyone who believes they may have information about any thefts of this sort, or who knows the identity of anyone involved, to contact officers in the Vehicle Crime Unit at Malinsgate Police Station on 08457 444 888.
“Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
