Full steam ahead for new adventure park

Posted: 17/10/2008 11:14:16

Work will begin in the new year on a £180,000 adventure play area at Kilkenny Lane Country Park in Brize Norton.

West Oxfordshire District Council has now appointed a contractor to build the play area. With a sensory garden for young people with multiple disabilities and landscaped features such as mounds, arches and tunnels, as well as play equipment, it will be the first of its kind in the district.

Equipment that will be used is designed to blend in with surroundings of the Country Park, on the edge of Brize Norton and Carterton, and encourage children to play and be active in a natural environment.

Cllr Hilary Biles, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Health, said: “This is an exciting project that will enhance the Country Park and create a special area for many children and families in West Oxfordshire to enjoy. The Council has worked hard to secure the funding for this and it is extremely good news that this project will get under way early in 2009.”

The Council has secured funding for the project from the following: £80,000 from the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) Children’s Play Programme; £50,000 from developers of Carterton North East housing (Shilton Park); £50,000 from the Government’s Play Builder Grant Fund.

The Kilkenny Lane park is one of three projects planned by the Council after a successful application to the BLF. Another project is taking place at the Worcester Road Recreation Ground in Chipping Norton, where £90,000 is being spent on a new multi-use games area, sheltered seating area and additional play equipment. The BLF funding has also helped towards setting up a ‘Play Rangers’ scheme to lead open-access activities for young people in play areas across the District.
