Girls thank firefighters following mud rescue

Posted: 26/03/2009 13:11:32

Two twelve-year-old girls who became stuck in mud on Sunday have been reunited with the firefighters that rescued them.

Georgia West and Lauren Fofana were pulled to safety by Ashford firefighters after becoming trapped up to their chests in mud while trying to cross a stream in Kennington, Ashford, on Sunday evening.

The two girls had been walking Georgia’s dogs in fields near Faversham Road when Lauren stepped into the stream and started sinking. Georgia waded in to help her friend, leaving her belongings on the bank, and also became stuck.

After trying to free themselves for an hour and a half, the girls managed to reach a mobile phone and dialled 999 to alert the emergency services of their plight. By now it was getting dark and the temperature had started to drop, putting them at risk of suffering hyperthermia.

Georgia said: “We want to say a big thank you to the firefighters for getting us out. When we first got stuck we thought it was quite funny, but as time went on we started to get really cold and started to go numb and realised we were in danger.”

Lauren said: “We’re also thankful to the police officer who found us and stayed with us until the firefighters came along and pulled us from the mud. It was a frightening experience and I am so glad they got us out.”

The girls were uninjured but were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Lauren’s mother, Nicole West, said: “We are just so grateful to the emergency services and it’s such a relief that the girls are safe and well. I dread to think what would have happened if they had been in there for any longer. We always watch emergency rescue programmes on television but you never for one minute think it ill happen to your own child.”

“We just hope that it will raise awareness of the hazards you can face while walking in the countryside.”

Ashford Fire Station’s Green Watch Manager, Clive Douglas, said: “We are just pleased that the girls are okay after their ordeal. I would advise all members of the public to be aware of the dangers around mud and water when out walking. What may appear fairly shallow water can turn out to be deeper than you think.”
