Young people prepare for Olympic-style tournament

Posted: 24/06/2009 19:45:55

Teams of young athletes have been picked to represent West Oxfordshire in the annual Oxfordshire Youth Games, which take place in Oxford on Sunday 28th June.

A total of 140 7 to 12-year-olds form West Oxfordshire will compete against young people from the county’s four other districts at the Olympic-style, multi-sports tournament.

The tournament will be held at the Oxford University Sports Complex in Iffley Road, Oxford, from 10am to 3.30pm.

It is the first time that the event, which is co-ordinated by the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership (OSP) to increase and promote participation in sport, is open to members of the public since it began four years ago.

West Oxfordshire District Council is a member of OSP and has organised trial and tournaments to select individuals for the teams that will represent the District.

Cllr Hilary Biles, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Health, said: “We have teams representing us in a variety of fields, including athletics, badminton, cricket, girls’ football, netball, tag rugby and tennis, which shows the immense wealth of talent among our young people in West Oxfordshire.

“I would like to wish all the youngsters who are taking part the best of luck – I am sure they will do West Oxfordshire proud.”

Entry to the Youth Games is free and there is a programme of entertainment and activities throughout the day, in addition to the tournament.
