Bromyard youth speed date with the professionals
Posted: 07/07/2009 12:33:34
Young people in Bromyard are being encouraged to join in a political speed dating event this month which aims to put youth-related issues at the top of the agenda in Bromyard.
Organised by Herefordshire Council’s youth workers and supported by HALO Leisure, the event provides an opportunity for young people to meet a range of professionals including councillors, youth workers, librarians, council info staff, leisure professionals from HALO, the police and school representatives.
Known as political speed dating, the idea is to get to know each other better and understand the roles everyone plays in the community. Young people also get to let the professionals know what they think about the way things are run in their area.
It’s a fun and light hearted way to stimulate discussions, meet other people, learn about who does what and explore ways of getting young people’s ideas and views heard locally. Speed dating rules apply: there is a limited amount of time for the public service representatives and young people to get to know each other, then they move on to the next person.
Pippa Hart, youth worker for Herefordshire Council, said: “The youth service has worked with the council’s youth involvement team to put on this event in response to recent concerns about the lack of facilities for young people in the area.
“Like speed dating, participants will meet on a one-to-one basis, which might be a bit scary for some of the less confident youngsters. So we’ll be holding a number of activities with the young people before the event, discussing ideas, opinions and viewpoints and helping them prepare to meet the professionals.”
Feedback from the event will be used to develop more facilities and activities for young people in Bromyard and open up communication between different groups in the community.
The political speed dating event takes place on Tuesday July 14 at The Bromyard Centre from 5-6.30pm and is supported by HALO leisure.
