Nordic Walking on its way to West Oxfordshire

Posted: 16/07/2009 22:04:08

Nordic walking classes for older people will soon be coming to West Oxfordshire as part of a project to increase opportunities for adults to exercise.

It is the first time that Nordic walking – which involves using two walking poles to exercise your upper, as well as your lower, body - will be available in the District.

The free, 8-week courses are open to anyone over 50 and are aimed at giving people the opportunity to try a new activity and exercise, while having fun.

They are being organised by GO Active (Get Oxfordshire Active), a project led by Oxfordshire Sports Partnership and supported by West Oxfordshire District Council and Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, as well as the county’s four other district councils, to encourage more over-16s to lead more active, healthier lifestyles.

Classes will take place in Charlbury every Saturday, from 2 to 3pm, from 15th August and Burford every Wednesday, from 10am to 11am, from 26th August. Taster sessions will run in advance of the courses for people to give Nordic walking a try:

Bampton Recreation Ground: 22nd July, 10-11am
Burford Recreation Ground: 5th August, 10-11am
Charlbury Playing Fields: 1st August, 10-11am
Chipping Norton Leisure Centre: 25th July, 10-11am

Nordic walking was invented by cross-country skiers for their summer training. Using poles in either hands means that while your upper body muscles are exercised, pressure is reduced on your knees and joints during walking.

Cllr Hilary Biles, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Health at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “I am very pleased that an activity has been set up suitable for all age groups and especially one in which older people are able to participate. As well as providing leisure facilities, the Council is committed to supporting and creating further opportunities for exercise.”

The Nordic Walking courses are being funded by Age Concern’s Big Lottery-funded ‘Fit as a Fiddle’ wellbeing programme.

Places need to be booked in advance. Anyone interested in taking part in can contact West Oxfordshire’s GO Active co-ordinator, Sarah Sandford, on 01993 861564.

Details of more activities available in West Oxfordshire can be found online at www.getoxfordshireactive.org.
