Ledbury ultrasound service success
Posted: 17/12/2009 18:04:14
NHS Herefordshire says it is delighted with the success of its new ultrasound service being delivered in Ledbury. Residents of Ledbury and its surrounding areas are now able to access ultrasound services from their local hospital, rather than having to travel into Hereford city.
In another successful venture between NHS Herefordshire and the Friends of Ledbury Community Health and Care Centre, ultrasound equipment has been installed at the Ledbury Centre. Patients are now able to have their ultrasound nearer to home and the new technology enables GP’s and Consultants to view the ultrasound images on their computers in their surgeries and out-patient clinics.
The ultrasound service commenced in July 2009 and provides a service on alternate Tuesday mornings. Since the introduction of the service, NHS Herefordshire says demand for the new local service has been high, with most ultrasound “slots” fully utilised.
When a patient requires an ultrasound their GP sends a referral to the radiology department at Hereford County Hospital. This is then assessed to see whether it is suitable for the Ledbury service. If so, the details are passed through to staff at Ledbury Community Health and Care Centre, who make an appointment and confirm this by letter to the patient.
Richard Carroll, managing director of provider services at NHS Herefordshire, said “Following on from their substantial support in 2008 towards the establishment of x-ray services at Ledbury, we are once again indebted to the generosity of the Friends of Ledbury Community Health and Care Centre for their significant involvement and contribution to the establishment of this new ultrasound service. This is great news for patients and the people of Ledbury who now may not need to travel to Hereford for ultrasound”.
Mr Bill Masefield, the chairman of Ledbury League of Friends said, “Thanks to the generosity of local people over the years through legacies, donations and bequests, and to the work of the Friends themselves through fundraising events, we were able to donate £55,000 which has helped to fund both the x-ray and ultrasound facilities. I am proud that the League of Friends can be associated with such a high profile service improvement for the people of Ledbury and district.”
