Planning go-ahead for new affordable housing

Posted: 21/12/2009 11:28:29

Three new schemes that will deliver 44 new affordable homes in West Oxfordshire villages have recently gained planning permission.

The largest, secured by Vale Housing, is for 24 homes at Swan Lane, Long Hanborough. A survey had already established that affordable homes are needed for local people in Long Hanborough. Excellent transportation links, a good school, shops and local services all add up to the village being a popular choice for affordable homes and the application was fully supported by the parish council.

Cottsway Housing Association has obtained permission to build 12 homes on land adjacent to Quarry Road in Chadlington and 8 homes in Wootton, (near Woodstock). Both villages are in need of affordable homes as local house prices are considerably higher than average incomes in West Oxfordshire.

It is hoped that building work will start during 2010 and that some of the homes will be completed later in the year or early 2011.

The above developments have been granted under the Council’s rural exception policy which means that applicants will need to have a local connection with the village.

Cllr Jill Dunsmore said, “Housing is expensive in West Oxfordshire and this often forces people to move away from their home area, leaving family, friends and sometimes employment behind. These new schemes are designed specifically to help people remain in their home area. They are a real boost to our campaign to provide more rural affordable housing in West Oxfordshire.”

During 2008/09 the District Council helped to enable provision of 115 new affordable homes in West Oxfordshire. Approaching 200 new affordable homes will be enabled between April 2009 and March 2011.
