Community invited to help light up Carterton
Posted: 12/11/2010 15:17:25
People living in and around Carterton are being invited to take part in free workshops to create lanterns ready to light up part of the town for its first ‘Winter Lights Procession’. Sessions led by Oxford-based visual artist Dionne Barber are being held for residents of all ages to drop-in and craft paper lanterns for the festive procession taking place on Wednesday 8 December, from 6pm. The free drop-in workshops are taking place between 10am and 4pm on: Saturday 20 November at St John’s Church, Carterton Saturday 4 December at Carterton Community Centre Lanterns are also being created by pupils at St John’s School in Carterton and local community groups, including Carterton Daytime Support, West Oxfordshire MIND and Carterton Children’s Centre. Residents are invited to display their lantern and take part in the procession, which will start and finish at the Community Centre on the Shilton Park estate and includes Christmas carols and festive fayre. The workshops and procession are being funded by West Oxfordshire District Council using developer contributions received as part of the North East Carterton Public Art programme. The project includes the ‘Evolve’ sculpture, inspired by communities coming together, installed close to the Community Centre in Marigold Square earlier this year and two life-size Shire horse sculptures which will be unveiled at Kilkenny Country Park. Cllr Warwick Robinson, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “There are strong community links in Carterton and the Winter Lights Procession will be a celebration for everyone to come together. The workshops and procession are open to residents of all ages and we hope that people will come along and get involved.” The procession is also supported by Carterton Community Centre, Carterton Daytime Support, Carterton Town Council, Cottsway Housing, St Johns Church and MIND. Carterton Community Centre manager Gill Carver, who lives in Shilton Park, said: “We are keen for people from across the town to join in. It’s a lovely time of year to be doing this and the procession should be quite striking – we hope it will be a magical experience for local people.
