New toilets and visitor centre for Burford

Posted: 06/06/2011 10:33:54

Work is starting on Monday 13 June to modernise Burford’s High Street public conveniences and provide new accommodation for the town’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC).

The public conveniences will be refurbished at their current High Street location and the space will be divided into two units to also accommodate the VIC.

The new toilet facilities will be modern and easy to maintain as opposed to the current ones, which are in need of repair and difficult to maintain to a satisfactory sanitary standard, with many of the cubicles no longer usable. The new facilities will have baby changing units and be accessible for those with disabilities.

Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment said, “Providing high quality and well maintained toilets is important and it is something that is appreciated by everyone. Over the last few years we have been refurbishing public conveniences throughout the district to bring them all up to a high standard. We are very proud to be able to do this as several councils across the country are contemplating closing their toilets.”

Currently, the VIC is in Sheep Street. Once it has moved to the High Street building, the Sheep Street property will be offered for sale as residential accommodation.

The new VIC premises will be custom built and include a shop front, which the service currently does not have.

Cllr Richard Langridge, Cabinet Member for Local Economy and Communities said, “The High Street is a prime position for the Visitor Information Centre and it will be ideal to be so close to public conveniences. The Burford VIC has always been very busy and it will be much more accessible and more visible after the move. It is excellent news for the town as tourism brings in huge benefits to the local economy.”

Work is expected to be completed late summer.

The refurbishment work will cost around £200,000, which is being offset by income generated by the sale of the Council’s current property in Sheep Street. By proactively managing its assets in this way, the Council has been able to improve and maintain services.

The Council has invested £800,000 in a public conveniences refurbishment programme which started in 2006. In 2008, it received recognition in the national ‘Loo of the Year’ competition run by the British Toilet Association after inspections were carried out at some the public conveniences refurbished as part of the programme.
