Good news for community affected by flooding

Posted: 02/08/2011 14:32:29

A Herefordshire Council bid for cash to help homeowners better protect their homes against flooding has been successful with £144,500 allocated to help 34 properties in Bodenham, Herefordshire.

It means homeowners in the area can look forward to measures such as the installation of flood resistant gates, outside wall renders, barriers, door boards and air brick covers to prevent their homes from flooding.

The money for the work comes from a total of £2.3 million Defra had set aside and which the Environment Agency has ring fenced to be used for flood protection scheme for individual homes across the UK.

The success in gaining funds from this heavily oversubscribed scheme was largely due to the high levels of community engagement being undertaken locally by the Bodenham Flood Protection Group.

The funding was approved in a bid submitted by Herefordshire Council, supported by the Environment Agency, and homeowners are now being provided with independent professional surveys which assess the risk of flooding, recommend ways of reducing that risk and subsidise appropriate mitigation measures for these properties.

Cllr Brian Wilcox, cabinet member for environment, housing and planning, said: “There’s a great strength of community spirit in Bodenham as householders have been proactive and have formed a flood protection group. Working together, we will ensure the money is spent in the most effective way to minimise the possibility of flood damage to those properties in the future.”

Environment Agency area flood risk manager Anthony Perry said: “We’re pleased to have assisted Herefordshire Council in obtaining this money for property level flood protection which is very good news for those affected by serious flash flooding in the Bodenham area."
