Council grant for Woodstock community centre
Posted: 26/08/2011 15:06:50
Plans to refurbish a community centre in Woodstock have been given a £35,500 funding boost from West Oxfordshire District Council. Built originally as a Drill Hall and located in New Road, Woodstock, the community centre is now in need of refurbishment so it can be used as a multi-purpose venue for the benefit of its regular users as well as encouraging new activities and bookings. Cllr Jill Dunsmore, Mayor of Woodstock explains, “The community centre is a valuable asset for the town and used by many groups, but bookings have been in decline for some time. We have patched, painted and washed but the state of the building has now gone beyond this. We want to make the space more flexible and attractive so more people and community groups will use it and we also think it would be an ideal venue for events such as weddings and private parties. The project has received widespread support from local residents” The work that needs to be carried out includes re-wiring, effective central heating, double glazing and insulation. The Town Council want to make it a greener, more energy efficient building. Cllr Richard Langridge, Cabinet Member for Local Economy and Communities said, “The existing building is outdated and so it is good news that Woodstock Town Council has taken on these huge improvement works for the benefit of its residents. I am particularly pleased to see the large level of support from the local community and congratulate the Town Council for successfully raising the funding needed for the project to go ahead.” A breakdown of the improvement works includes:
* Turning the main hall into a flexible space suitable for art exhibitions, drama, lectures, films, parties, private hire events, dance and exercise classes. * Removing the current low ceiling and installing roof lights Adding new windows to the rear of the hall. * Double glazing all windows/rooflights, and where possible implementing further green energy options such as improved ceiling insulation. * Providing a new meeting room for local societies. The total cost of the project is £145,000 and contributions will be from: Woodstock Town Council, WREN, West Oxfordshire District Council, Cottsway Housing and local societies and private donations. The project will retain the first floor in its present form with the commercial tenancies in place.
