Herefordshire schools take on challenge to cut their energy use
Posted: 10/10/2011 09:08:39
As part of a project being run by Herefordshire Council in collaboration with the Carbon trust, 12 county schools are taking part in free workshops aimed at helping them reduce their energy usage.
Schools account for 34 per cent of the council’s carbon emissions and the free workshops are being run by the Co-op during h.Energy week (October 15 to 23).
The workshops are aimed at getting the schools to focus on the Carbon Trust’s Collaborative Low Carbon School programme (CLCSS) which aims to help them reduce energy costs, protect them from rising energy prices and help support Herefordshire Council’s target of reducing carbon emissions by 30 per cent over a five-year period ending in 2015.
Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for environment, housing and planning, said: “I am delighted so many schools are involved in this project which can help us make a real difference in getting everyone to change their behaviours and reduce energy usage as well as helping the environment by tackling climate change.
“Pupils are great advocates of best practice and they will also encourage their parents to think about switching off appliances when not in use which will further help us reduce emissions.
“Schools will, at the end of this programme, also be sharing their findings and results with other schools so they can benefit from the project as well,” he added.
During h.Energy week, two of the schools are also showcasing what they are already doing to make their buildings more energy efficient and others are illustrating their wider environmental work.
On Tuesday, October 18, Ewyas Harold primary school is showcasing its Eco School programme between 2.15pm and 3.30pm. Anyone interested should call 01981 240432 to book a place.
Ledbury primary school is also opening its doors on Wednesday, October 19, to demonstrate the steps they take to make their school more energy efficient. To book a place on either the 10am or 1.30pm tour, please call 01531 632940.
Kimbolton primary are illustrating their environmental work with a display at the Courtyard on Monday, October 17 as part of “h.Energy at the Courtyard Theatre”.
Energy audits are also currently being carried out at the 12 schools taking part in the project and the results of these will be used to develop action plans for reducing energy usage such as switching off lights and computers when not in use.
Secondary schools taking part in the project are Aylestone Business and Enterprise College, Hereford’s Bluecoat School and Fairfield High School.
Primary schools taking part are Eardisley, Ewyas Harold, Garway, St James, Kimbolton, Ledbury, Madley, Orleton and Whitchurch.
