Calling all green fingers
Posted: 11/05/2012 10:52:06
Local communities, groups and organisations are being encouraged to bid for funding to develop green improvement projects in Herefordshire.
The green infrastructure project aims to make environmental improvements to urban and rural areas in Herefordshire by offering local groups funding and advice to carry out their own projects. The project was developed by the Herefordshire Tree Forum and is being supported by Herefordshire Council, Hereford City Council, The Woodland Trust, Heineken UK, Hereford Civic Society, The Bulmer Foundation, Wyevale Nurseries and Natural England.
The green infrastructure project has set up a challenge fund administered by Herefordshire Council, which people can apply to in order to secure funding to run their green project. Applications will be accepted from any community, group or organisation but the project must take place within the boundaries of the following Herefordshire wards: Central, St. Nicholas, Three Elms, Credenhill and Burghill, Holmer and Lyde.
The fund is now open for applications, however big or small and is due to close at 5pm on Friday July 20 2012. To request an application form, please call 01432 260753 or e-mail delegatedgrants@herefordshire.gov.uk. Alternatively a copy can also be downloaded from www.herefordshire.gov.uk/greeninfrastructure.
Nicky Davies, Herefordshire Council’s biodiversity co-ordinator, said: “The green infrastructure project is an incredibly worthwhile initiative and we hope local communities will get on board and help make environmental improvements in their ward areas.
We’re keen to explore a range of ideas, including environmental improvements within school grounds, planting trees and orchards, creating allotments, cleaning streams and ditches, building otter holts and developing pedestrian / cycle routes.”
She concluded: “We’ll also need volunteers to help carry out the projects, so we’re looking for people to roll up their sleeves and help out in their local community, whether it’s planting trees or serving well deserved cups of tea.”
For further information on the green infrastructure project, please contact Juliet Wheatley, team leader conservation at Herefordshire Council on 01432 260157 or GIP@herefordshire.gov.uk.
