Royal acquaintance renewed - 50 years on

Posted: 18/05/2012 13:18:02

Memories are set to come flooding back for county pensioner Camilla Mantle who is due to the meet The Queen for a second time half a century after first meeting the monarch in Hereford.

After more than half a century, pensioner Camilla Mantle is due to meet The Queen for a second time.

As Mrs Camilla Gooding, she was Mayoress of Hereford in 1957, when she and her husband, Mayor Alderman C. J. Gooding, played host to The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh.

Now, 50 years on, Camilla will get the chance to renew old acquaintances when The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visit the county for Herefordshire Diamond Day, on Wednesday, July 11.

When The Queen visited Hereford back in 1957, it was believed to be the first time in three hundred years a reigning monarch had visited the city.

The visit took place on April 24 1957 and Camilla has fond memories which prompted sleepless nights prior to the big day.

“Although I’m 88, I can remember everything about that day. It was such a thrill,” said Camilla.

“I didn’t get much sleep the night before but both The Queen and Prince Philip put everyone at ease; it was such a wonderful occasion.”

Now Camilla is looking forward to the opportunity to meet The Queen again when the Royal couple visit the county for Herefordshire Diamond Day which will take place on Hereford’s King George V playing fields.

Herefordshire Diamond Day is a celebration of all that is good and great about the county and there will be performances throughout the day from local dancers and musicians.

There’ll also be trade stalls and food outlets.

Camilla added: “It will be another great occasion and one I’m looking forward to tremendously.”
