When Rural Media film makers met day services
Posted: 25/06/2012 15:26:51
Widemarsh Workshops, day services for people with learning disabilities in Herefordshire, is the focus of a short film made by young local filmmakers from The Rural Media Company’s Big Lottery funded project, Shoot Out.
The workshops, run by Wye Valley NHS Trust, enables adults with learning disabilities to participate in supported work experience in several social businesses. These include activities ranging from cooking in a café , garden maintenance, manufacturing of wooden products and and serving customers in retail outlets
The film was made by 13-year old Dora Grasby, who is Shoot Out’s newest member. Dora, a pupil at the Cathedral School, filmed the activities of the workshops over two days. She said: “I feel like I know more about my community now. This was my first community film and I have learnt a lot about what makes a ‘good shot’ and interview techniques.”
The idea for featuring the Workshops followed a chance meeting with Christof Meckel, Inclusion Support Worker for Widemarsh Workshops, at the ‘Herefordshire Health and Well Being Day’ in February 2012. After five minutes of hearing about their work in Hereford, the Shoot Out team knew the workshops would make a fantastic digital story for their young filmmakers.
Director Sara Keetley said: “I thought that Dora did an amazing job with the film and am really pleased that it will help get the message out that it is everybody’s fundamental right to have an enjoyable life in which they are not discriminated against.”
Over the past three years Shoot Out has provided free filmmaking workshops to over 646 young people aged 13-19 in Hereford and made 81 films.
Nathan Williams, one of the Shoot Out film mentor’s, said: “Not only do we try to give young people new skills in film literacy and digital storytelling, we focus their energy on real projects with people in their community. Widemarsh Workshops was the perfect opportunity to do just that.”
