Traffic relief for Crawley
Posted: 20/07/2012 16:16:44
Funding is now in place to expand traffic calming measures for the village of Crawley near Witney. For many years residents have been concerned about the increasing speed and volume of traffic using Crawley as an unofficial by-pass between the north and west of the town. Chicane-type controls were installed on most of the roads coming in and out of the village a few years ago, with the exception of Leafield Road where there are no measures in place. Cllr Stephen Kirkham, Chair of Crawley Parish Council said, “The Leafield road is dangerous for walkers and cyclists. It is a very narrow country land and the heavy weight of large vehicles is seriously eroding the bank and damaging dry stone walls.” Further traffic calming measures can now take place following a request by West Oxfordshire District Council to release funding of around £10, 000 of S106 money from developer contributions for the industrial developments at Range/Downs Road. Crawley Parish Council is putting in £4,000 and Oxfordshire County Council £3,000. Cllr Kirkham was delighted to hear the news, but was keen to stress that the scheme is a short term solution. He said, “More traffic calming control will help enormously and we need to manage as best as we can in the short term, but resolving the issue long term lies with the full review of Witney’s traffic.” Cllr Warwick Robinson, Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing at West Oxfordshire District Council said, “Traffic through Crawley has been a concern for residents for many years. These proposed new measures are welcomed and will help to alleviate the problems, especially those caused by large vehicles using the Leafield Road. We are pleased to have helped with releasing funding for this purpose.” The proposed scheme for the Leafield Road is a ‘build out’ which will kerb and narrow the road forcing drivers to slow, or even, stop and check before proceeding.
