Funding granted to improve Hereford congestion points

Posted: 11/10/2012 11:52:17

People who drive through the city of Hereford will soon benefit from new schemes to ease congestion and improve traffic flow at 'pinch points' in various locations along the A49 in Hereford.

Transport Secretary Parick McLoughlin announced this week that the Highways Agency will deliver 20 vital road improvements to boost the economy, reduce congestion and improve safety in the Midlands.

Herefordshire will benefit from the funding with three improvement schemes earmarked for three points along the A49 in Hereford, at the Starting Gate, Edgar Street and Asda/Belmont.

Councillor Graham Powell, cabinet member for education and infrastructure said: “We’ve worked with the Highways Agency and the Local Enterprise Partnership on the development of proposals for these schemes and we’re pleased that they’ve been earmarked.

“We’re pleased they’ve announced this funding as it’s good news for helping to ease congestion in Hereford.

“These schemes will ensure bottlenecks are removed and improve access across the city to the new Edgar Street development and Enterprise Zone at Rotherwas.”

The Highways Agency is developing detailed designs for the improvements at all three junctions with works commencing next year.
