Science Café: Renewable energy and climate change

The role that renewable energy sources could play in combating climate change will be discussed at the next Bath Science Café, which takes place in The Raven pub in Queen’s Street at 7.30pm on Monday 8 January 2007.

Professor Geoffrey Hammond, a mechanical engineer and energy analyst at the University of Bath, will outline how technologies like bioenergy, solar energy and tidal, wave and wind power could reduce humanity's environmental footprint, in industrialised and developing countries.

"Britain faces a series of major challenges in making its energy sector more sustainable,” said Professor Hammond, Director of the International Centre for the Environment at the University of Bath.

“Global warming is regarded by many scientists and policy analysts as one of the most challenging phenomena to threaten human development.

“In order to tackle the threat of global warming, the UK needs to embrace zero or low carbon technologies, including energy efficiency measures, renewable energy systems and possibly even nuclear power.

“But, at the same time, increased demand for fossil fuels from rapidly developing nations, like China and India, exacerbates both resource and environmental problems.

“Low carbon, sustainable energy technologies are therefore at the heart of moves towards sustainable development.”

The Science Café is an ongoing series of monthly events where some of the country’s leading scientists will talk informally about their research over a pint.

The event will be held in The Raven pub in Queen Street in the centre of town. No tickets or reservations are required - just turn up at 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start.

Organisers will ask for a small voluntary donation to cover travel costs for the speakers. Other Bath Science Café events already planned include:
