Rodmarton Manor - A house and garden history
Posted: 08/01/2007 16:44:13
Gain a unique insight into the past and present of Rodmarton Manor house and garden at this evening lecture, given by Simon Biddulph, on Thursday 25th January at the Corinium Museum, Cirencester.
Rodmarton Manor, near Cirencester, was built and furnished according to the ideals of the English Arts and Crafts movement - a late 19th century reaction against poor design and the increasing use of machinery instead of craftspeople.
Ernest Barnsley and the Cotswold group of Craftsmen built and furnished the house for Claud and Margaret Biddulph. Work began in 1909 and took over 20 years to complete, involving a variety of different crafts, including building, woodwork, gardening, needlework and painting. Simon Biddulph lived at Rodmarton Manor from 1955 to 1970 and again from 1991 to the present day, with wife Christina and three (now married) children, the third and fourth generations of the family. The house and garden are open to the public in the summer and there is great interest in both, with visitors attracted from all over the world. The lecture runs from 7pm – 9pm and tickets cost £5 per person. Annual season ticket holders and Friends of the Corinium Museum receive a 10% discount.
Booking is essential. Please contact the Corinium Museum on 01285 655611 or email museums@cotswold.gov.uk to book a place.
